High culture is paranoid about sentiment, but human beings are intensely sentimental. And if art doesn’t speak language that’s acceptable to people, it relegates itself to obscurity.

About This Quote

When it comes to high culture, I am of the opinion that it is over-sensitive about sentiment. Shakespeare, Beethoven and even Johann Sebastian Bach were all sentimentalists. But they were also highly talented and highly respected. How does one define high culture? Is it the music of Beethoven or the works of Shakespeare? The answer seems to be that there is no clear definition. However, we do know that we have a need for art that can speak our language and relate to us and we see this in everything from movies and books to TV shows and video games.
